José Mota is from Vila Franca do Campo, São Miguel, Açores, Portugal. He currently lives in Pawtucket, Rhode Island in the US.
In addition to playing the Portuguese guitar, viola do fado, and viola baixo, José is also a craftsman who made many string instruments currently being used by fado musicians in the US and beyond.
