The project Amália Hoje, which brings together musicians Nuno Gonçalves, Sónia Tavares, Fernando Ribeiro, and Paulo Praça, returns to the stage in April for two “special” concerts in Lisbon, it was announced today.
“With the celebration of the centenary of Amália Rodrigues numerous invitations arose for the return of the project, however, the pandemic postponed the opportunity to see these songs on stage again.
After almost a decade without performing on national soil, the time has come to be able to watch again this show that pays tribute to the greatest diva of Fado,” says the promoter of the shows, scheduled for April 1 and 2 at Culturgest, in a statement released today.
In addition to Nuno Gonçalves, Sónia Tavares, Fernando Ribeiro, and Paulo Praça, drummer Mário Barreiros, guitarist Israel Pereira, bassist Carl Minneman and a six-piece choir will also be on stage at the concerts.
The project Amália Hoje appeared in 2009, the year that marked the 10th anniversary of the death of the fado singer Amália Rodrigues, “after an invitation from Valentim de Carvalho to Nuno Gonçalves, with the objective of reinterpreting some songs from the vast catalog of the ‘Diva of Fado’, having full freedom to choose the compositions, collaborators, arrangements and all the musical direction”.
The project recorded an album, also entitled “Amália Hoje”, released in April 2009, composed of nine fados “immortalized by Amália Rodrigues and reinterpreted with a contemporary pop approach”.

O projeto Amália Hoje, que junta os músicos Nuno Gonçalves, Sónia Tavares, Fernando Ribeiro e Paulo Praça, regressa aos palcos em abril, para dois concertos “especiais” em Lisboa, foi hoje anunciado.
“Com a celebração do centenário de Amália Rodrigues surgiram inúmeros convites para o regresso do projeto, contudo a pandemia veio adiar a oportunidade de voltar a ver estas canções em palco.
Depois de quase uma década sem se apresentarem em solo nacional, chegou o momento de ser possível assistir de novo a este espetáculo que homenageia a maior diva do Fado”, refere a promotora dos espetáculos, marcados para 01 e 02 de abril na Culturgest, num comunicado hoje divulgado.
Nos concertos, além de Nuno Gonçalves, Sónia Tavares, Fernando Ribeiro e Paulo Praça, estarão também em palco o baterista Mário Barreiros, o guitarrista Israel Pereira, o baixista Carl Minneman e um coro com seis elementos.
O projeto Amália Hoje surgiu em 2009, ano em que se assinalou o 10.º aniversário da morte da fadista Amália Rodrigues, “após um convite da Valentim de Carvalho a Nuno Gonçalves, com o objetivo de reinterpretar algumas canções do vasto catálogo da ‘Diva do Fado’, tendo plena liberdade de escolha das composições, dos seus colaboradores, dos arranjos e toda a direção musical”.
O projeto gravou um álbum, também intitulado “Amália Hoje”, editado em abril de 2009, composto por nove fados “imortalizados por Amália Rodrigues e reinterpretados com uma abordagem pop contemporânea”.
