Tonight’s fado night took place at the Grupo Desportivo da Mouraria, housed in a former palace of the Távora family and located high in the hills of Lisbon’s Mouraria neighborhood.

The concert headlined the fadista Teresa Siqueira, a 50-year veteran of fado who, despite her widespread recognition, performs only on the most special occasions–including when she is joined by her well-known daughter, Carminho.

The event is available for viewing online until Sunday, Oct 3, 2021 at 9 PM ET

Portuguese-American Leadership Council of the United States–PALCUS–continues its 30th-anniversary celebration with a special concert from the CATEDRAL DO FADO or the Cathedral of Fado.

In the years since the Grupo Desportivo da Mouraria was founded in 1936, hundreds of professional and amateur fado singers and musicians have passed through this cathedral, in fado concerts that begin in the afternoon and stretch long into the evening.

Teresa Siqueira was joined by her two guests–Sofia Ramos and Luís Matos–breakout talents equally at home in fado and musical theater.

Fadista Luís Matos

These three fadistas were accompanied by two musicians who are bound inextricably to this neighborhood and to the fado that happens so often within it: Sandro Costa on the Portuguese guitar and Ivan Cardoso on the viola do fado.

The Portuguese-American Leadership Council of the United States (PALCUS) partnered with the Portuguese American Cultural Exchange (PACE) to host a series of exclusive virtual Fado concerts. and conversations with some of Portugal’s most prestigious Fado artists.

The virtual event series is made possible by the Luso American Foundation (FLAD), with sponsorship from Portugália Marketplace, Licor Beirão, The Navigator Company, Anchor Construction, UMass Lowell, and MDVIP.

The concerts provide an opportunity for Portuguese clubs and organizations in the US to host viewing events that help bring together local communities.
